Historic Churches Pivotal in the American Revolutionary War | One-mile walk
 

Trenton Walks is teaming up with Mike McCormick, representative of the Kiwanis Club of Trenton, and Harry Jackendoff, founder of Trenton Cultural Castings and Office Administrator of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, to co-host a walk featuring the historic churches of Trenton, which reflected the politically divided Trenton community on the eve of the American Revolutionary War. Walkers will learn about St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, whose congregation had mixed Loyalist and Revolutionary sentiments. In July 1776, the vestry voted to close the church. During the ensuing Battle of Trenton, Hessian mercenaries used the building as a barracks and stabled their horses in the church’s cemetery. Walkers will also hear about First Presbyterian Church’s pastor, Rev. Elihu Spencer, who was a notable patriot of the revolutionary cause. His church was damaged during the December 1776 military clashes. They will also learn about the Quakers founding of Trenton in 1679. Their Friends Meeting House was a critical community hub, and during the Revolutionary War, it was used by both British and Continental troops.
